This outstanding resource is an old favourite of mine and was downloaded over 70,000 times on the schoolhistory.co.uk website. This new and updated versions comes with some great new activities. The aims and objectives of this lesson are: Theme: What were the consequences of the break with Rome? Know: What did people believe about how to get to Heaven or Hell? Understand: Why were people prepared to die for their beliefs? Evaluate: What was the most important reason? WILF: What Am I Looking For? Identify & describe: What did people believe about Heaven & Hell? Explain: Why people were prepared to die for their beliefs? Analyse: Begin to come to a judgement on the consequences of the Break with Rome on religious beliefs in Britain? This resource includes six activities and one assessment task with a pupil friendly assessment for learning mark scheme with next steps feedback. Activity 1 is designed a snowballing starter using all the key words. Full instructions included. The first part of the lesson looks at what people believed in the 16th Century and explains the different Catholic and Protestant views of how they believed Christians could get their souls cleaned in the 16th Century. This part of the lesson links in well with my lesson on the reformation or why was there religious conflict in the 16th & 17th Centuries. Activity 2 is designed to build upon what students have learnt in the first two slides through a source analysis of image of Hell / Purgatory, which can be completed in groups / pairs. Activity 3 is a feedback activity linked to Activity 2 with an opportunity to mark / improve their answers with purple pen. This is followed up the class discussion in Activity 4 around with a predictive discussion around why people were prepared to die for their beliefs linked to their ideas of Heave and Hell. Activity 5 focuses around the St. Bartholomew's Day Massacre in Paris in 1572 to provide students with a comparison with what was happening in England at this time. I have included some great sound effects to accompany these slides - please see the instructions at the end for unzipping the presentation. Activity 6 is a consolidation exercise which asks the question who was the bloodiest Tudor. I have included statistics and links to video clips to help extend the learning here. The final task is an extended piece of writing and includes an AFL blooms pupil mark scheme on the question 'Why were people willing to die for their beliefs in the 16th Century? ' I've also included some advice for students on how to structure their answers. These slides could be printed of for the less able students. I have uploaded the same lesson twice. These resources / unit of work looks at why the Nazi persecution of the Jews became more extreme from 1918 - 1945? The first few chapters look at the status and position of German Jews in 1918 and then moves on to look at the Nazi rise to power and the propaganda, economic, legal, physical attacks on the Jews from 1933 - 1938. Each chapter is designed with revision and summary sections. I have also included some of my Smart Notes with aims, objectives, differentiated outcomes, starters and summary diagrams to accompany the booklet which you can adapt as you go along. T he next section then looks at the impact of the war on the next stage of the attack on the Jews by looking at the forced segregation and isolation through ghettoes, which was followed by the work of the Einsatgruppen Battalions as the German Army advanced into the USSR. My booklet then asks the question why did the Nazis then decide to move to a 'Final Solution' before moving onto the industrial methods and tactics used to murder the Jews through 'Destruction through work ' and 'special treatment.' The final section or conclusions then explores some of the historical controversy surrounding how far the German people should be blamed for the persecution of the Jews. If I have quoted from a primary or secondary source then full attribution has been given whenever possible. Please note that my resources were written for a British audience so you may want to run them through your US / local spell checker. The module of work forms part of the Citizenship curriculum within School. It sets out to link the theme of ‘rights and responsibilities’ of our students at a local level of citizenship to the wider global context of human rights abuse. The learning journey will see students explore Human Rights set out by the United Nations Convention of Children’s Human Rights before analysing abuses of such rights. Case study examples are highlighted through the work of Amnesty International and the British Red Cross. The concept of push pull factors are explained in relation to asylum seekers and refugees using a Doncaster context before tackling the issue of prejudice against such groups. This great resources has successfully engaged students of all abilities for over 24 years. It was the number one download on the website www,schoolhistory.co.uk. This much loved resource has been updated and tweaked so that it is accessible for the full ability range. The worksheet comes in two sections. The first looks at the traditional story of the Gunpowder Pot as it has been taught to school children for hundreds of years. I have created a series of questions and activities aimed at foundation and core students that helps them to study an old Victorian school history book version. This is a great exercise to help students appreciate how history has been taught in the past. The next section looks a the revisionist version of the Gunpowder Plot and gives students a series of contemporary sources and secondary research by historians to help them decide whether Guy Fawkes was innocent or guilty. The activity aims to get them to draw a table to help them analyse the information before having a go at writing a newspaper report from either a Catholic or Protestant stand point on what happened. Why did people believe in witchcraft in the Seventeenth Century?

These outstanding resources look at why people believed in witches in the seventeenth century and why there was an increase in the number of witch hunts. They are beautifully designed and differentiated for the full range of ability. When you purchase this resource you will be able to download a four page Microsoft Word Document and an accompanying seventeen slide PowerPoint which includes information, sources, links to video clips, starters, plenaries, questions and differentiated tasks and activities. The lesson begins with a choice of starters including a snowballing activity of the key words, a buzz and go squares activity or a source analysis of witches selling their souls in return for magical powers. It then moves on to explain why people believed in witches and the social, political and economic reasons for an increase in suspicion and fear which helped to fuel an increase in witch hunting during this period. The lesson looks at how witches were identified and which groups of people were unfairly persecuted and used as a scapegoat for problems at the time. Both resources include a range of different questions and activities which can be printed off and used with your students. The PowerPoint includes further differentiation and support material for students. These tasks and activities include source analysis questions, as well as a thinking skills review activity to extend the more able which could be used in tandem with a heads and tails activity for the less able. This great resource has been tried and tested over 25 years and looks at the causes and results of the Protestant Reformation. However, before you look away, this resource is designed to suit the full range of learning abilities that you would find in a main stream school. Some of you may even recognise parts of this resource from an older version, which I have now updated, from school history, that was downloaded over 400,000 times. This is a must have resource! The PowerPoint includes 5 activities. The first activity is a snowballing starter using all the key words in the lesson. The second activity gets students to annotate / label a medieval painting of purgatory. This will hopefully lead to a class discussion on ideas about Heaven and Hell. The third activity is to update and correct their labelling with purple pen. There then follows a series of slides and links to video clips explaining medieval ideas on relics, indulgences (Pardons) and Martin Luther’s role in challenging them. This is all done simply at a level that main stream students can understand. The fourth activity, gets students to design their own Wittenberg Poster using Martin Luther’s ideas. This can be completed and aged for homework using tea bags or coffee and makes an excellent classroom display. 1000s of my students have completed this task and loved it! The final activity, which might take a second lesson, gets students to compare and contrast the similarities and differences between a Catholic and a Protestant Church. This literacy mat can be printed off back to back in A3 colour and laminated to use with your students in lesson to help them structure their work using the correct sentence starters and connectives. The literacy mat also includes guidance on spelling, punctuation, structuring paragraphs using PEE and PEEL as well as the correct then, their and they’re. This is a must have resource for any humanities teacher. The idea of a ‘mat’ is UK idea where you stick or place a resource like this one on the desks of your students to help them structure their work and avoid common mistakes. This resource was created in partnership with Lesley Anne who also has her own TES shop so please check it out as well. Please note, it might be an idea to run this resource through your own US spell checker to avoid any common errors. E.g. we spell words like colour and neighbours slightly differently to you guys across the pond. Is there such a thing as a just war? Can the massive death and destruction of armed conflict ever be morally justified? Should we stand by and allow innocent people be raped and murdered in horrible acts of genocide? This outstanding resource has been tried and tested in the classroom over many years and aims to help students understand some of the main arguments for and against the Just War Theory. It can be used as a starter, plenary or main activity to accompany any main stream text book or resource on this topic. The nature of the task means that it appeals to the full range of ability. How bloody was Queen Mary I, 1553 - 1558?

This outstanding lesson has been featured at various history teacher conferences across Europe and featured on several well known websites as an example of outstanding practice. It has also been used as a training resource on how to teach the difficult topic of historical interpretation to students. The aim of this exciting lesson is to help students assess just how bloody Queen Mary I was by evaluating the views of both eye witnesses from the time and historians. It is suitable for a range of abilities, but mainly core and advanced. When you download this lesson you will have a PowerPoint as well as word document with 12 primary and secondary sources about the reign of Queen Mary I 1553 - 1558. The PowerPoint includes a snowballing and pair and share starters, slides on why Mary I executed the protestants and why she is such a controversial historical figure. This is followed up with links to carefully selected video clips which can be used with your students. Afterwards, you then have the luxury of deciding whether to do the card sort exercise either a continuum, pro and con organiser or as a simple sort. I would recommend printing off the appropriate slides on A3 to go along with these activities. Sometimes, I allow my more able students to decide individually which organiser they wish to use, but you could always decide for different groups as part of your differentiation. Once this has been complete, students can then have a go at answering the assessment question in activity 4: Does Mary I deserve the title, ‘Bloody Mary’? This slide also includes a suggested structure for answering the question, along with possible connectives. I've also thrown in my award winning literacy and persuasive literacy mats to help sweeten the deal. The final plenary slides looking at how history is written will help your students draw their own conclusions about just how bloody was Queen Mary I. It continues on from my previous lesson on why people why people believed in witches and why there was an increase in the number of witch hunts in the 17th century. This lesson focuses also on the methods and tactics that men like Matthew Hopkins used for hunting witches and how James I tried to apply a more ‘rational’ approach. If you are short for curriculum time, this great way to quickly cover the key events for Bloody Mary, The Spanish Armada, The Gun Powder Plot and the Pilgrim Fathers, whilst fitting them into the bigger picture of what was happening in the run up to the English Civil War. If you decide to use it in this way, it might be an idea to get your classes to chose one or two of the topics to do in detail. What were the Consequences of the Break with Rome for both British and American History?

Henry VIII’s break with Rome set in play a series of events that dramatically changed the island history of Britain and led to both political and religious refugees seeking safety in North America in what would one day become know as the ‘The Land of the Free.’ The next two hundred years of British history were riven with religious divisions between Catholics and Protestants, that still haunt parts of the United Kingdom and Ireland today. If we wish to understand the origins of American character, then we have to first understand the rich fertile soil from which it sprang in England. In the immediate aftermath of the ‘Break with Rome’ England changed it’s state religion several times, whilst both sides persecuted each other, accusing the other side of being heretics. The most famous, but certainly not the most bloodiest, resulting in the deaths of 280 Protestant Martyrs during the reign of Queen Mary. Her sister Elizabeth I executed far more Catholics whilst trying to come to a compromise through the Elizabethan Church Settlement Act, which left many feeling very unhappy. This ultimately led to the English Catholics trying to kill King James I and Parliament in the now infamous Gunpowder Plot in 1605. Later in 1620, fearful of Catholic plots and further persecution for refusing to attend the Church of England, the ‘Pilgrim Fathers’ left England never to return in the hope of finding a place where they could freely practice their faith in North America. Later of course these divisions would implode into the English Civil War in 1642 and result in the execution of Charles I.The resulting conflicts would see thousands seeking religious toleration in North America. This outstanding lesson is designed to be an introduction to Britain and the Slave Trade and help students understand not only the origins of slavery, but the difference between a wage earner and a slave and why slavery was eventually abolished. Now this might seem like a lot to ask, but this lesson has been carefully crafted and field tested by experienced teachers. The lesson opens by explaining the origins of slavery in classical times. It them moves on to compare and contrast the rights and freedoms of slaves with serfs, indentured servants and finally wage earners. This is all linked into the wider context of British history. The lesson then rounds off with a source analysis of Adam’s comments about slavery and why it was expensive, inefficient and costly compared to employing wage earners. This helps to provide a broad overview within which you can then explore the slave trade and its eventual abolition. This lesson is suitable for the full range of ability. These resources look at the origins of anti-Semitism in Europe and how it evolved into the Final Solution. The key focus is on events in Russia, France and Germany, but is important to point out to your students that it was evident throughout Europe and the USA at this time. If you are new to teaching or studying this topic then its important to understand that anti-Semitism still exists and that the need to find scapegoats or someone to blame when things go wrong is one of the more nastier aspects of human nature and that falls to each generation to how this in check through education. The old biblical quote ‘Evil is when a few good men decide to do nothing’, is very relevant to studying this topic. The modern version of anti-Semitism that we in Europe at this time grew out of events in Russia. The country was struggling politically, economically and socially so the Russian Tsar’s tried to redirect the Russian peoples attention onto blaming or 'scape goating ’ the Jews. This led to attacks on the Russian Jews which in turn led their mass migration into Europe and the USA. The arrival of these refugees stirred up latent anti-Semtism which made it harder for the existing Jewish communities and turn both anti-Semitism and Zionism into political movements in Europe. These movements were fueled by the political, social, economic and military crisis that grew out of German Unification 1871, The First World War 1914 - 1918, the Treaty of Versailles and the the creation of the Weimar Republic in 1919. These events are covered in the resources that cover Russia, France and Germany 1880 to 1920. The booklet the 'Nazi attack on the Jews 1919 to 1945, cover the rise of the Nazi Party and the impact of the Great Depression and the Second World War 1939 - 1945. When teaching your students about anti-Semitism do not forget that Facism or Nazism was not limited to Germany. The SS drew their recruits from all across Europe. Anti-Semitism was not a ‘German’ problem, it was a European and American problem based upon the prevailing racism of the time. My Dutch grandmother always drew a distinction between the ‘German Army’ or the ‘Wehrmacht’ and the SS. She remembered seeing a Dutch member of the SS shoot an old lady who was trying to pass food and water to Dutch Jews who were being deported in the cattle cars. Kind Regards Roy
